Young London believes that the energy and enthusiasm of young people can be harnessed to bring about positive change in London. We believe that our governments and institutions can make a difference in our communities if we take our responsibilities as citizens seriously. Our programs provide platforms for young people to show that there is hope for our future and that their voices matter in shaping public policy decisions that affect London's future.
The London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is dedicated to ensuring that the opinions of young people are taken into account in local public policy decisions. We aim to revive active citizenship in London by encouraging young people to actively participate in the decision-making processes of governments and institutions that impact our communities. The LYAC inspires and educates young people about the impact they can have by advocating for their beliefs, developing policies, and engaging in politics as responsible citizens.
The LYAC serves as a youth government that amplifies the perspectives of young people on a wide range of public policy issues to the decision-makers in formal governments and institutions. Comprised of 14 elected Councillors representing the citizens of London, the LYAC regularly convenes to discuss and debate youth perspectives on topics such as economic development, transportation, waste management, and culture. Councillors also engage with their constituents through various means such as canvassing, social media, surveys, outreach to youth organizations, public consultations, and events. They receive training in advocacy, policy writing, community development, and public relations to enhance their leadership skills. The Councillors are supported by a dedicated staff team, a dynamic group of volunteers, and an experienced Board of Directors.
The LYAC firmly believes that the optimism, idealism, and passion of young people can drive positive change in London's future. We are convinced that our governments and institutions can contribute to the betterment of our communities if we fulfill our responsibilities as citizens. The LYAC Councillors demonstrate that there is hope for our political future and that the voices of young people deserve to be heard when making public policy decisions that impact the future of London.
