The York Region Skating Academy (YRSA) offers a comprehensive skating program for all ages and skill levels. The CanSkate program focuses on teaching the fundamentals of ice skating, with 7 stages of progression covering essential movements such as going forward, going backward, stopping, turning, spinning, jumping, and pre-preliminary skills. As skaters advance through the stages, the difficulty level increases. YRSA also offers a Pre-School CanSkate program specifically designed for children aged 3-8 who have never been on the ice before.
The CanPowerSkate program, regulated by Skate Canada, is geared towards hockey and ringette players aged 6 and above who already have basic forward and backward skating skills and can stop on command without using the boards. Developed by a team of experts, CanPowerSkate focuses on balance, power, agility, speed, and endurance, teaching skills and techniques in a progressive manner that applies to game situations. It serves as an excellent complement for athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams.
YRSA is a not-for-profit figure skating club and a member of Skate Canada. The organization is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and follows the rules and procedures set by Skate Canada. Only registered Skate Canada professional coaches in good standing are allowed to teach figure skating and CanSkate programs at YRSA.
Overall, YRSA's programs provide excellent fundamental training for those interested in advancing into figure skating, hockey, or ringette, and offer a challenging, rewarding, and fun curriculum for skaters of all ages.
