West End Food Co-op

The West End Food Co-op is a non-profit organization that aims to bring healthy and culturally appropriate food to the West End community. The co-op serves as a hub for food change, addressing the needs of all stakeholders in the local food system and seeking solutions to shared problems. Its owner-member groups include farmers, consumers, workers, and community partners. The co-op engages in various activities such as hosting a weekly farmers market, community food programming, and developing a community-owned store. By creating new markets that connect producers, food artisans, and consumers, the co-op contributes to community-based job creation and food programming and education. The vision of the co-op is to establish a thriving local community food culture that positively impacts the economy, environment, and society, while promoting a connection to a sustainable global food system. The co-op originated from a small group of individuals in Toronto's West End who aimed to bring fresh, local, and sustainably-grown foods to their neighborhood. They started the Sorauren Farmers' Market in 2008, which quickly became a vibrant part of the community. In 2009, the co-op began selling community bonds to fund the construction and development of Toronto's first multi-stakeholder food co-op. With grant funding and partnerships, the co-op opened its doors in 2012. The Sorauren Farmers' Market is now year-round, and the co-op offers a range of programming, including workshops and a community kitchen. The co-op focuses on promoting local foods, organic foods, sustainably-grown foods, prepared grab-n-go foods from their Co-op Kitchen, hosting food workshops, and food security programming. Their goal is to establish a local foods co-operative grocery store and community kitchen that showcases the best of local farmers and food producers, provides a welcoming coffee and lunch service, offers ongoing workshops, and hosts a weekly market.
