In southern China, acupuncture has been used to treat autism, ADD/ADHD, and cerebral palsy since the 1990s. Recent clinical research has shown that acupuncture can stimulate blood supply and improve the function of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe, which are responsible for cognitive and verbal functions. Combining acupuncture with conventional behavioral intervention has been found to be more effective than behavioral treatment alone. After 1-3 courses of specific acupuncture treatment, most autistic children experience improvements in eye contact, language ability, communicative skills, and a reduction in behavioral symptoms.
