Government House

Government House is the official residence and office of the Lieutenant Governor, who represents Queen Elizabeth II in British Columbia. It serves as the ceremonial home for all residents of British Columbia and is the province's center of hospitality. The House and its grounds host large public events, as well as invitation-only ceremonies, receptions, and dinners to honor and celebrate individuals and organizations. The Lieutenant Governor also offers accommodation to distinguished visitors, including members of the Royal Family, international royalty, heads of state, and other honored guests. The Government House grounds, located in Victoria's Rockland neighborhood, encompass 36 acres, including rare Garry Oak ecosystem and formal gardens. The gardens are maintained by volunteers and are wheelchair accessible. The site is a popular attraction for both locals and tourists and is open to the public free of charge, except for the interior of the House, which can be visited during seasonal guided tours. The history of the property dates back to 1865 when it was first purchased by Governor Kennedy.
