The Union, Cupe 116, is often asked why they advocate for the membership to support a political party, specifically the NDP. They acknowledge the impact politics can have on their ability to represent members, as workplace gains can be undone by politicians. Conservative and Liberal governments have targeted wages, pension plans, and working conditions. Elected officials have the power to improve or worsen our lives, so it is crucial to define and build support for a legislative agenda that benefits working people. Labour's history shows that standing together in the political arena leads to the greatest gains for all of society. Therefore, they believe it is essential to work with political parties that reflect the needs of working people. Cupe 116 is a Union with 1927 members representing various roles on campus, including custodial services, IT services, tradespeople, and support staff.
