Community One Foundation, formerly known as the Lesbian & Gay Community Appeal of Toronto (LGCA), was established in 1980 by a group of Toronto activists. The foundation was created in response to the lack of financial support for community projects and organizations. The founders recognized the importance of philanthropy in building community and connecting great ideas and good people with the resources needed for social justice. In 2008, the LGCA rebranded as the Community One Foundation to reflect the ever-evolving and diverse community it serves, and to promote unity and philanthropy. The foundation has expanded its reach to include the regions of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York in the Greater Toronto Area. As an LGBTTIQQ2S foundation, Community One provides grants to organizations for projects that enhance the development of LGBTTIQQ2S communities. To date, the foundation has supported over 1,000 important and innovative community projects.
