Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society

The Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society recognized the need for additional funding for anesthesia-related research due to diminishing funds from provincial and national agencies in the 1970s and 1980s. In response, the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF) was established in 1979 to administer research funds and provide support to anesthesia researchers who are members of the society. The CARF funding framework allowed the launch of the Society's Research Grants Program in 1985, which now administers over $300,000 annually. The program includes operating grants, fellowship awards, career scientist awards, and resident research awards. These awards are distributed based on the peer-review process and recommendations of the CAS Research Committee. The mission of the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation is to promote the generation and transfer of new knowledge to advance patient care and safety in anesthesia, perioperative medicine, critical care medicine, and pain medicine in Canada.
