The BIObus, operated by the Collections Unit at the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics at the University of Guelph, has been conducting research on insects and other invertebrates in biodiversity hotspots across North America since 2008. It has visited all Canadian provinces, the Yukon Territory, and various parts of the United States. Over 20,000 species and hundreds of thousands of specimens have been collected. Each specimen is photographed and analyzed for its DNA barcode upon return to the laboratory in Guelph. The Collection Unit serves as a research and development facility for high-throughput methods of collecting and preparing animal specimens for DNA analysis.
