Art Gallery of Calgary

The Art Gallery of Calgary, formerly known as the Muttart Public Art Gallery, was established in 1977 through a collaboration between 14 artist associations and the Calgary Public Library. With funding from the Gladys and Merrill Muttart Foundation, the gallery opened in the Memorial Park Library and gained recognition as a leading public art gallery in Western Canada over the next two decades. The Muttart was known for its innovative art education programs. In 2000, the gallery relocated to two historic buildings in downtown Calgary and adopted its current name. Today, The Art Gallery of Calgary continues to showcase contemporary art and provide art education programs for all ages, without seeking to establish a permanent art collection.
